This morning, a double rainbow appeared in the sky, quiet and bright like a gentle gift. Its colors stretched open across the blue, soft yet unmistakably full of presence. It felt like nature whispering a reminder… that beauty often arrives without effort, without us chasing, planning, or preparing. It simply appears.

Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche once shared a teaching that touched my heart deeply: when a rainbow appears vividly in the sky, we cannot wear it, hold it, or grasp it. It arises through many causes and conditions coming together, and then it fades. There is nothing solid to catch. Our thoughts are the same vivid, emotional, convincing in the moment, but ultimately without true substance.

When we forget this, thoughts can feel heavy and powerful, pulling us into worry, doubt, or grasping. But when we remember their rainbow-like nature, something softens. We realize we don’t need to chase every thought or believe every story the mind creates.

In that gentle space, love and compassion naturally rise. Not as something forced or practiced too hard, but as what has always been here like sunlight waiting behind rainclouds.

Seeing the rainbow this morning reminded me that thoughts come and go, emotions move like soft waves, beauty often arrives quietly, and kindness is always within us, simply waiting for a little space to gently shine through.

May we all see our thoughts like rainbows luminous yet ungraspable. May we offer ourselves and each other the softness of compassion. May our hearts remain open like the morning sky over Hawaiʻi.
